Wow, I just discovered two serious crushes: Brit from Disarming Darling and Madeline from jean greige. They're total babes, and together they run Tunnel Vision, a perfectly curated and styled online vintage shop. Their individual blogs showcase eclectic and alternative personal style that seems simultaneously effortless and involved, with layers of jewelry, vintage tshirts, and perfect boots. It makes me wish more than ever that my loved ones would relocate to California. Not only is the weather beautiful and the ocean a constant inspiration, but I've read time and again that vintage hunting is incredible there, and that's clear from the collections these ladies have put together.

It was a bit cruel of the universe to have me stumble upon these blogs when it's snowing every day here in Chicago and I never want to leave my apartment. I'll just hope that it's a promise for future change.
FYI, Madeline (jean griege) dressed up as John Lennon with her boyfriend as Yoko Ono for Halloween, and it was perfect.

2012 is the year of ABBA. They showed up throughout 2011 (I found a Greatest Hits record in the dollar bin for Nicole, Daniel requested to hear them upon his arrival in the summer, I watched Mamma Mia, they were featured prominently in one of my favorite episodes of Community), just giving a little teaser here and there to let me know they were going to bring it in full force in 2012. I've been spending some real quality time with their music and videos, and my life is being enriched, I tell you!

My favorite song right now is this beautiful gem:

Of course, Frida and Agneta have incredible style. Could their dresses be any shorter? God I love it. I think those are technically tunics, but those ladies laugh in the face of technically.

Perhaps my favorite performance by the girls is in this video for "Honey Honey" - also one of my favorite tunes, it's so cute.

I love them for wearing something purely because it's awesome, because it is clearly not flattering. They're so cool that they don't give a shit about that. They know a work of art when they see one, and they're gonna wear it more comfortably than you could ever imagine.
Now, let's talk about their dance moves. This is the kind of lackadaisical dancing that makes me just swoon. If you're not going to destroy the dance floor, kill it softly like this. Give it a slow death so painful that you are forced to transcend the pain and experience a new kind of pleasure all those horror movies have told you could only be achieved through intense torture. Little did you know you could die just as blissfully to the hypnotic sway of butts sticking out slowly. This is what Pinhead really needed. (Imagine him pressing play on the video for "Honey Honey" right after delivering this line.)

And then we have Benny and Bjorn. Not only do the boys often dress as though they're about to embark on a magical quest, but they always have the greatest expressions on their faces and a twinkle in their eyes. That's why, no matter how excellent Frida and Agneta look, my eyes and heart are drawn to Benny and Bjorn.

Dang, they are looking like some actual babes in that second photo.

This is my favorite style moment for them as a group. Everyone is KILLING IT. Frida's perm and snakeskin jumpsuit (with matching choker and wrist cuffs!); Agneta's giant sequins, hot shorts, and star bindi; Benny's silver heeled boots and giant blue feather; and, excuse me, Bjorn??? I know I said this is my favorite style moment of you guys as a group, but Bjorn, you have exploded into space.
1. You're wearing a cape.
2. You are also wearing a choker.
3. Your pants are entirely covered in glitter, and are they just melding into your boots? Is that all one piece? God I love you.
4. You're wearing the most shiny and sparkly things out of everybody.
5. Have you looked at your guitar?? Words can not describe.
6. Again, YOU ARE WEARING A CAPE.
You are also somehow managing to have more fun than everyone else, which is intense, because everyone is obviously having the time of their lives. Benny gives you a run for your money now and then, but Bjorn, your expression is true pure joy. I declare, you are the most delightful man I have ever seen. Tell me your secrets! And please tell me they begin with capes and glittery boots.

It's past time for more updates to our shop. I've been so broke due to the whole not-having-a-job thing, although I'm enjoying nearly every second of life especially now that I have two precious beasts hanging with me 24/7. Zero's a precious beast too, but he works a lot, because he's responsible and kind. He didn't even take a break during the holidays, so he's taking a long, well-deserved, overdue vacation starting this Sunday!! I'm so excited to spend all that time with him, and I'm really happy for him to have a week to just relax and have fun. And cherry on top, he made plans with me to drive out to Aurora for all the vintage goods. I'm so lucky, he's the greatest person in the entire world.
Let me also tell you that I've never met a boy whose style I love more. He's a total babe!!

Listed a few more items in the shop today! The last from my most recent shopping trip. Which means I'm going to have to have another soon- yay! Finding those special pieces is my favorite part, even though I get totally exhausted after just an hour of combing the crowded racks. I'm also attracted to so many different styles; it's like every single version of myself is there throwing in her two cents, but I know I have to refine my selections somewhat, and it's tough. Not like I'm-gonna-cry tough, but maintaining focus in a thrift store is not an easy feat. Honestly, I'm not sure I've ever truly done it.

My favorite piece we just added is this super soft and furry lavender sweater. It's the color I would dye my hair if I thought dye wouldn't totally destroy my already frazzled mane. It's seriously one of my favorite colors lately. One day right after the sun went down, the sky was this color, and I took about five million photos of it with Zero's phone. I'm sure he appreciated that. The best part is that the texture and color of the sweater are a nearly identical match for this little one-eyed dolphin that my niece Jenny gave me for my birthday, which she chose to do before I'd even seen The Cove and reconnected with dolphins and whales. She must be psychic.

Aren't they perfect for each other? I'd have such an awesome wardrobe if I kept every cool thing I've found in the past year. But I tend to wear the same things all the time, so it's better that I share rather than hoard. Somebody should be wearing this sweater on the regular.

Now that the holidays are nearly over, I hope to dedicate even more time to updating the shop and posting here. I know Nicole's with me on that. It's been difficult adjusting to running the shop apart, but I think we're finding our way. And who knows what 2012 has in store for Gets Galore? Some poetry, obviously. And maybe we'll be working together again before the year's out. Until then, I think we'll each find a lot of gems out there to share.

We added more new items to the shop! Including a matching blue windbreaker/short set in 100% silk that I wish I could keep. It's seriously the softest loveliest thing ever- not what you'd expect from what is essentially sportswear. If I still lived in Portland, I would wear the windbreaker every drizzly day.

We have another two-piece outfit going up next week, too. Here's a little preview:

This is what I'm talking about. Why mass produce new clothes constantly when you can find gems like this just sitting around waiting to be loved again? Vintage and secondhand forever. I love imagining the elementary school art teacher who wore this as a full outfit in 1987. She was cool. I think they work better separately, but I respect that lady who wore them together.

While I was working on the store the past couple of days, I had Toddlers & Tiaras streaming on Netflix, and while you think it might be all glitz, there are some real children of the night on that show, and I gotta share a couple of standouts with you.
1. A seven year-old boy who competes in pageants said, "I wanna do pageants until I get into my graveyard." YES. I love it. Don't you wanna say you're going to do what you love not until you die but until you get into your graveyard??

I'm not gonna lie- I've been wearing my sweatpants fairly regularly lately. I have fun with clothes, and I love dressing up, but I like to dress for the occasion, and these days, the occasion is usually another solo dance party in my studio apartment. Obviously, the comfort and ease of sweatpants is what wins me over when it's cold in the morning and I'm just trying to make some breakfast. But what keeps me in them is laziness. Thank heavens for dance music. Lately I've been asking if you're brave enough to let me see your peacock, and yesterday while I was dancing, I got hot but was jamming too hard to stop and change, so I just pulled up the legs on my sweatpants and sagged them on my hips instead of wearing them at my waist, and my heart soared. This is a look that is near and dear to my heart but had been forgotten. Naturally, it came back to me when I needed it most.
It's a real flashback to my middle school days and the dance moves I'd bust out at the school dances. As soon as the DJ started playing "Creep" by TLC, I would do the butterfly, and you know it. The ladies of TLC, Aaliyah, and Gwen Stefani were just some of the super cool babes who rocked some saggy baggy pants, and I love them for it.

Later, when I was looking on youtube for people dancing to Peacock (important research), I found another superbabe mastering this look. And oh my god, I am in love with her choreography. It is soooooo much fun.

There's a tutorial for "Rude Boy" but I'm finding it difficult. Mostly because I have about two feet of floor space. I need a dance studio- BAD. Don't we all?

I finally arranged our room so I can shoot for etsy. (And then I dressed up and looked really sad.) Zero's going to help me. He's the most amazing person in the entire world. The other night, we were watching Grimm, and he was like, "Oh yeah, this is Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Bears." To which I replied, "Do you mean Goldilocks?" "What? Who's Goldilocks?" He meant it. "It's Goldilocks and The Three Bears." "Oh, I thought it was Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Bears." I know you wish you could have heard that conversation in person.
But for real, I'm starting a fan club for Zero. New, exclusive photos every day. Interviews. I'm gonna get the scoop, y'all!
For real real, I've got so much velvet for the shop. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to part with the velvet blazer. It has a hole near the shoulder, but it's sooooo beautiful and I kinda want to wear it all winter. I can't believe winter is almost here. I hope there's one more sunny day of fall for me and Zero to go to Navy Pier and ride the ferris wheel.

Well, great- all my plans to work on the etsy shop are ruined, because my amazing family had to go and make my birthday wishes come true by getting me and Zero plane tickets to North Carolina!! Ugh, why do they have to be so thoughtful and loving and generous?

It was supposed to remain a surprise until tomorrow, but last night I was updating zerosaidthis from Zero's phone when he got an email from Marcus about a trip to Raleigh. I can't help it that I can read so fast! I put the phone down immediately, but I already knew too much. So I told Zero what I had seen, and he tried to play it off, but there was no turning back, and he told me, and I DIED!!!!! Seriously, though, a wail arose from within my body that only a person dying at the hands of a monster could make. I was afraid the neighbors were going to think someone was killing me. I wish everyone could have seen it, because it was so hilarious.
It's just been my secret dream to see my family, but I was trying to be cool and positive about the alternative. I was making plans with Zero to do fun stuff here, like go to the roller skating rink, and make it like a really cute date. But deep down inside, I really wished I could also be with my brothers and sisters and nieces and nephew. So when Zero blew my mind with the news that we have plane tickets to North Carolina for my birthday and Halloween, my heart exploded. It's such an incredible gift. The kind you secretly wish for but would never be able to say out loud because it's just too much. Like the kind of thing that only happens in stories and not in real life. A real dream come true!!

I love my brothers so much, you guys. I can't believe I'm going to be with all three of them!! And Zero! And Katie and Nicole and Jodi Ann! AND JENNY AND REAGAN AND BRINKY! Oh yeah, and ICARUS. I love my family so much. We've been through so much together. It's overwhelming to think about it. We should go on a comedy tour. We'll call it the Dead Parents and Terrible Choices Tour. Perfect, right?
Apparently Reagan wants me to be Emma Frost this year.

I don't have the boob power to pull off any of the first three, so I think I might have to go with her Russian outfit. Not to say that if I found a white jumpsuit I wouldn't wear it, because I totally would.

I'm sure you've all gotten me a birthday present already, but just in case you've been struggling with finding the perfect thing while you think of me all day long, here's a list of things I would love:

1. The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells. A used copy is just fine!

2. Freaks and Geeks: The Complete Series on DVD. It's only one season, but it's the best ever. And it's one of those shows that I should have watched a million times by now but haven't, so I'm ready to put it on all the time and memorize lines.

3. Stephen King's It. I don't know why I don't have this book anymore, but I really should have it. If I had to be buried (alive) with a book, I'm pretty sure it would be this. ...Whatever that means, weirdo! Check out this image I found while looking for the cover of It.

I know that movie was kind of terrible, but I loved the kids they cast (even if they weren't all right for the parts). I wish Seth Green made it into this photo. He was a great Richie. God, that story is just so amazing and incredible and beautiful and epic.

4. Eddie Vedder posters. But only long-haired pre-beard Eddie. And shirtless, apparently.

Wow. I wouldn't dream of having sex with him- that's how much I loved him/was lying to myself. I was respectful. And eleven years old, YIKES. Keanu Reeves, on the other hand, was treated like a piece of meat in my diary! My 5th/6th grade diary is rough. It's unrated. It's mortifying. I've read Cringe. I know people wrote about silly things in their youth. But I was insane. A very special kind of insane. It's too much. I think I'll have to be an elderly woman before I can share the whole thing. Sometimes I look back on diaries I've kept, and I am appalled, sincerely. I'm glad my brain kept developing.

Black Sabbath of the early 70s completely encompasses the feeling of fall for me. Heavy, mystical, creepy, sexy, exciting, total babe and beast town. Their music makes me feel like I'm in the woods on a cold and overcast day dressed like a witch and making out with my boyfriend.

God, Ozzy was such a freakin babe. And the other dudes were just total badasses. I need this as a poster on my wall, now. I'll get rid of everything else I have if I can just have that.

Tony Iommi is my guitar hero. His riffs are so sick. Yes, I said it! HIS RIFFS ARE SO SICK. This entire performance is incredible, everyone is transcendent they are so good. Their drummer is a beast. Ozzy's singing is too real.
If I had been a teenager during this time, I would have seen them play live, and I would have been in the front row, and I would have literally died.

What is even happening here? According to youtube, this is from a German TV show. Can you imagine just diddling about your business, turning on your TV, and seeing/hearing this? Your mind would melt and you would turn into a radioactive puddle of ooze.

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around all the changes that have occurred in the past two weeks. I've kept a steady stream of The Wonder Years and My So-Called Life flowing since Justin and Nicole left with Icarus. At least when I cry at the end of an episode of TV, I can then laugh about it pretty much immediately, because it's not actually my life. I'm brilliant!

Anyway, I have way too much positivity going on right now to dwell on the sad things. Not that I don't like dwelling on sadness- don't get me wrong! I will cry all day and all night, gladly! But it is October, after all, and this month deserves the star treatment. Why not pretend that life is an amazing movie right now? Well, maybe not when I'm trying to learn how to use a drum machine and making terrible beats for days (weeks) before finally getting the hang of it. But movies don't show everything. No one ever has to pee in the movies, and I'm certainly going to have to keep doing that this month. What I mean is that I need to at least have many moments throughout the day that are film-worthy.

1. Private dance parties. I'm working on a playlist now. It's going to be terrible/wonderful. I'm the most amazing dancer when I'm alone, and you'll never know if that's true. Unless I send you a video I make. It happens! Private dance parties also includes singing really loudly along to really embarrassing songs that I know all the words to- this, for instance:

2. Reading really creepy books with candles lit all around me. Christopher Pike counts as creepy. I really want to read Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for some reason. For "some" reason.

3. Dress up time, Clueless-style. I am so excited that I don't have to wear head-to-toe AA five days a week anymore. I actually love their clothes, but I need more freedom! I can't wait to wear all the beautiful clothes I thrifted in the past year but never wore because I just had to wear jeans on my days off. I'm so excited to experiment with different combinations that before were only a dream! For real! I'm being real.

4. Zero. Just being with him is the best thing ever, and everything he says and does deserves to be recorded and kept as a testament to the greatness of human history for all time.

I guess this means that right now, I'm the person in the movie before the long montage of being awesome, when I'm kinda just a blargh derping around loserville. "Charlotte," you say, "You'll always be that to me." Well, thank you, that means a lot. I'm cool with being a loser right now, especially since I just can't help it. I'm giving myself this week to set up our space for optimal excellence (yes, exactly, perfect). And then the awesome montage begins. But first, I need a lot more scented candles and at least one candelabra. And you know, of course, this:

Disney forever.

Look, everyone makes mistakes. Everyone stumbles now and again. No one is perfect. So let's not dwell on Disney's bad calls. Instead, let's think about how Disney has brought us some of the most heartbreaking tragedies of all time.

First, we have Bambi. I'd been craving Bambi for months, and I finally found it at a thrift store on VHS while looking around with Nicole, so I convinced her to get it, because she collects VHS tapes. Then I begged Justin to please watch it with us a few nights later, and he eventually agreed. I just knew it was going to be amazing, and it was. I couldn't even remember the last time I had seen it. Well, I cried pretty much the entire time. And was charmed into outer space by Bambi, Thumper, and Flower.

I mean, seriously? Could this scene be any more perfect? No, it couldn't. It's perfect. I love Thumper's laugh. I love Bambi's sweet voice. And I love everything about Flower. He makes me just want to die he's so sweet.
Bambi really takes its time and lets you become a part of this woodland world. It's nothing like the Disney you see on TV with its insane fast cuts and intensely bright colors and hyper-dialogue. Bambi is quiet and subtle and sweet. It's really beautiful, a true work of art.

Then, of course, there's the Fantastic Four: The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty & the Beast, and The Lion King. I was seven years old when The Little Mermaid came out- an age destined to fall in love with that movie completely. I was 11 when The Lion King was released, and I saw it in the theater like seven times. It was truly magical to be a kid during such a great time for Disney. All the songs from those movies are a part of me forever, and the storytelling was so excellent. I particularly like the animation from this age, too.
Though I was most obsessed with The Lion King- I used to watch it every day after school in the 6th grade (we had just moved to a new city, and I think it was helping me), though I would have to fast-forward through Mufasa's death because it was too intense (it still is- I always cry during that scene), I used to think Beauty and the Beast is the best. Mostly because of the opening scene. The music is totally haunting. I also love the Beast. I just love him forever. Now that I'm writing this, though, I think I love The Lion King more, ultimately. The story of a little lion witnessing his father's death, thinking he caused it, then learning the truth that his uncle actually murdered his father and blamed him, and coming back to avenge his father's death and take his place as the leader of his pride is just a little more poetic than a spoiled prince being turned into a monster and stealing a girl away who eventually teaches him how to love. Just a little. Not to diminish Beauty and the Beast. Gaston is one of the most hilarious and most evil Disney villains. And really, this, again:

Man if I was a powerful wizard or enchantress I would go around pranking princes in castles too.

Finally, I'd like to talk about The Hunchback of Notre Dame. This movie is not for kids!! I saw it as soon as it came out, since it was on the heels of a golden age, and I really loved Pocahontas and was still very much enamored with Disney in a very child-like way. I remember thinking that this movie was so intense and dark. I mean, yeah, Bambi's mother dies, and Simba's father dies... maybe since my own father died at such a young age, I was like, "Sure, that shit happens to kids. You gotta deal with it." But Hunchback was twisted. All the super creepy religion and lust and this incredibly tragic figure who was so pure of heart but deformed, and he doesn't actually win out in the end, it's just this terribly sad ending to top of a terribly sad movie. I was pretty amazed even then.

The music is also really amazing. I used to play Heaven's Light/Hellfire on the piano all the time in high school. Yes, I had the sheet music to the soundtrack for The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Yes, I was super cool.

Everyone is like: ''Disney teaches us that he didn't get the girl because he's ugly'' but I'm starting to think that it wasn't only the people who believed he was ugly but HIM. And it's perfectly understandable since Frollo kept telling him that but, how can you love someone when that person doesn't love himself? Thanks to my friend Lauren for telling me about asos.com. They have incredible clothing, and among that they have a million beautiful jumpsuits. I wish I had a jumpsuit for every day of the week. The problem I have is that I love the jumpsuits that were made for the tallest, skinniest, and longest legs people of all time. Which is the opposite of my body shape. It's sad. One day I'll have some tailored perfect jumpsuits and I'll be truly happy. What? Just kidding, I do enjoy other aspects of life. Here are some of my favorites from the site:

Goodbye Summer

Well it's really quite warm and humid here in Va Beach today, but it stormed this evening, and it's supposed to be in the 60's tomorrow. I heard from a sweet perfect little birdy that it was 55 degrees in Chicago today (YUCK!) and so I thought it would be nice to say goodbye to my dear friend, Summer.

I really wish I had taken more pictures. Most of these are Charlotte's (or the Internet's), but alas, I wish I had more people, clothes, and especially food represented here. I'm so pleased with all the cooking I did this season, even though it tended to be a bit lazy. Summer is my favorite. I love warmth, sun, sweat, and of course my birthday. It's funny and suits us both fine that Charlotte prefers autumn and I summer. I think if we were in the Color Me Beautiful world, I would be autumn, and Charlotte would be summer which is funny. Although, I think Charlotte may be spring, It's hard to say.

My nights have really gotten away from me lately. At the end of a long day of work, I just want to sprawl out on the couch, surf the internet, eat all the snacks of the world, drink beer, watch movies and TV, and play Peggle. Listed like that it sounds like a lot, and it is a lot. Of blargh. It's not easy to beast out like that on the daily, but I have been giving it my all. And the results are not pretty. They're beautiful. J/K, they're horrifying.
Tonight, I surprisingly owe the turning of a new leaf to Justin and Zero, aka PeePopsicle and DooDooDaggers, as they're known in Uncharted 2 Online Multiplayer Death Match, which they have been playing all day long. Their totally geeky loser boy status (I'm kidding, I sincerely think they're awesome for going for it) inspired me to get super girly on my ass. I'm going to start spending my evenings at home straight grooming: showers at night instead of the morning so I hit those sheets fresh, time spent brushing my hair, painting my nails, moisturizing, picking out the next day's outfit, and on and on. Not only will this keep me from hogging off into the wee hours of the night, but it will make my mornings so much more pleasant and relaxed. Maybe I'll even have time for tea before work now instead of on the way! I don't often indulge in these kinds of things, you know, like hygiene, which is why it's so exciting for me. New territory. It does remind me a bit of sleepovers in my early teens minus the pizza (RIP). I feel straight up like Cher Horowitz:

Sure, I've spent practically the whole evening looking for photos of hotties and cuties to post on our tumblr. Yes, I spent at least a half hour with gifs of Tom Hardy. I use my time very wisely, thank you. I'll accept my award now.

Tom Hardy, I only feel right calling you by your full name for some reason. When I look at this photo, Cillian really steals the show. And rightfully so. But it's clear that you are a (not so) secret winner here, Tom Hardy. Are you even really there? The other two men are wearing suits, and I think you came to this event straight from the gym. You are the hottest man of all time.

Cillian, no. And when I say no in that way, you know I mean YES. You are superb. Don't change a thing, please. I'd love to know what happened right before this moment to make you sling your jacket over your shoulder, put your hand on your hip, and give stank face. Someone was rude, that much is certain. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is amused, but I think he's always that way. Don't worry, though, Tom Hardy is going to kill the person who wronged you.

The combo of these two gentlemen is a magnificent dream.

Portishead's been my favorite band since I was old enough to have good taste in music. They're not the album I put on every time I want to listen to something, but their music is a part of who I am. I think they'll always be a part of me forever. One of the best things about the band is that they're not really interested in publicity or talking to anyone at all. Geoff Barrow will sometimes, but that's about it. Beth Gibbons is the last member of the band who is trying to speak publicly, and it's so charming. It just makes me love her more. Let's take a minute and think about how she chooses her style:

Dazed and Confused is on instant Netflix! God I love this movie. The soundtrack is the best, and the fashion is amazing, and I love the entire cast, but especially Rory Cochrane and Milla Jovovich. The dream stoners. Neither of them participates in the degrading freshman hazing. Both of them are clearly in another world the entire movie, and I love them for it.
You know what I will never regret? Being a stoner in high school. Once I went there, I never looked back. High school was the perfect time to be a stoner. No real responsibilities and that reckless abandon that you can only have when your brain is not completely developed and you body hasn't started deteriorating yet.
I know all the arguments against it, but I am just so glad that I got to experience the hilarious fun of being a stoned teenager. Because I am an adult now, and I do have responsibilities, and my body has opinions it never had, and I think about my mortality. And those are BUMMERS. I've still got the spirit inside, though, and I'll always have that.
Milla has the spirit. God, what a babe!!

Last night, I uploaded to facebook a series of photos from a trip John, Justin, Zero, Nicole, and I all took to California right after Zero and I moved to Portland. Facebook kinda sucks, I think we can all agree, for many reasons, but I gained a great new appreciation for it after I was provided with a page to help identify and tag everyone in the photos. It's the best. The original photos are amazing, but getting to see each person's individual work at once with that tiny little square highlighting their face is especially hilarious. I don't know why John's were broken up except that those first two photos deserve their own space, for sure.

You might have noticed a new layout and a new author on Gets Galore- my darling Nicole wrote her first post last night! It's about time, too. We started our etsy shop of the same name just a month after moving to Chicago last year and our tumblr just a short time later, so it feels right to make this blog a joint project now. Especially since Nicole and I won't be living together anymore, this will be a fun way to share what's inspiring our style and what's making us laugh (very often the same thing). We still have our own personal blogs, linked to on the right. Hopefully these changes will mean more updates here! Um...sometimes I can be very sentimental. When this happens I'll listen to a little David Byrne, Leonard Cohen, Tori Amos, PJ Harvey, or Edith Piaf to name a few. Today, driving from Va Beach to Philly I went all the way. From my mother's cd collection I got Ultra Sentimental on the sounds of Judy Garland, Nina Simone, Leonard Cohen and Paul Simon. Unfortunately I reached my destination before Tom Waits. Anyway, to completely ruin my first great attempt at an impressive blog post for GetsGalore.blogspot, I've got to share this video:

Most of my thoughts can be summed up by judybinbong via youtube:

However his fashion (as well as Ladysmith Black Mambazo) is a perfect description of my stlye, jeans and a t-shirt. I mean the shirt size varies as well as the jeans. Check out how many various styles and colors of jeans are represented here! And don't forget a cheeta print guitar strap to tie everything together. The crowd shots at 6:10 or so (if you can make it that far) are also a really great gauge for style.
Paul Simon is a magical man. His physical being and his artistic being are so dramatically different. But anyone who can incorporate choreographed dancing into their stage set is A+ in my book.

This video is a perfect example of how my brothers and I are exactly the same people now we were as children. Lee is very focused on eating and judging, enjoying the fireworks and getting some private laughs from the conversation. Marcus is insane, working on destroying that watermelon in a very hilarious way, also enjoying the fireworks and making fun of our dad. I am also focused on eating and judging, and I'm clearly trying to stay in my own world undisturbed, surely just waiting til I'm done with that watermelon so I can get back to reading that Baby-Sitter's Club book. Justin is insane but in a different way from Marcus. He can not believe the audacity I have to even consider talking about my own issues when his are so much more intense. I mean, he got SPLATTED IN THE FACE.
I like how tired my mom clearly is, and how she's just sitting back and enjoying the ridiculous conversation we're having. And my dad was very obviously smitten with all of us. He certainly recorded us enough. I wish I could have known my dad better. I think I owe a lot of my favorite qualities in myself to him. He loved horror movies and cartoons and documenting things and making jokes and being silly. I mean, he rode the Shock Wave with Marcus! I don't think I could ride that roller coaster now.

I just got got HARD by this photo. Let's really examine it.

First of all, one glance and you're exploded by the color pink. Although really it's mauve. Mauve was where it was at, apparently. I don't know if this was more my doing or my mom's- it's hard to say. I don't remember passionately loving mauvey pink, but I obviously liked it. I do think my mom probably loved the idea of getting super girly with her only daughter. BUT I GUESS I'LL NEVER GET TO TALK TO HER ABOUT IT NOW BECAUSE SHE DECIDED TO DIE THANKS A LOT MOM. Oh my god, I'm sorry, that is way too intense for anyone. Anyway, I think the mauve was more her doing, but whatever, I embraced it wholeheartedly. I still like that color.

Next, something a bit more subtle: my claw hand. What am I doing anyway? I certainly appear to be rocking that baby doll to sleep, judging by the shushing shape of my mouth. But does that really require such a claw grip on the crib? Yes, it does. While we're on the topic of my appearance, I'll tell you that I do vividly remember that outfit. Oh the paisley pants and matching vest. How I loved you. I genuinely thought that outfit was just the bee's knees, it was so cool. Looking at it now, I can only agree with my child-self. It's an almost psychedelic pattern. My mind was already there.

We must, of course, discuss the dolls and toys. We've got Talking Mother Goose and a stack of her books and tapes. I LOVED that little lady. I've actually looked for her on ebay before, because I want to hear her sing the lullaby collection. I played that one constantly. The lullabies were so spooky and beautiful. I really hope I get to hear them again one day. If I could find that tape I would die happy. If not, I'm going down PISSED. We've also got the Magic Key dollhouse!! I don't know if anybody else had this toy or remembers it, but it definitely blew my mind. It was an entire little dollhouse world- you can see all the little houses and then the big mansion, which was the best. But what made it so cool was that every tiny doll had a magnet under their feet, so you could use this big magic key, which also had a magnet, to move them around- down the street, around a room, whatever. I thought it was the coolest thing ever, and I played with it constantly. Well, when I wasn't rocking creepy baby dolls to sleep like a creature. Finally, I'll just mention the orange cat on the bed. I kept it placed there always. Looking back, I realize how obsessive-compulsive I was with my stuffed animals. They all had their little places and I had to be sure they were put there or who knows what would have happened.

One more thing getting me about this photo that you might not notice upon first glance: the window above the desk (where you'll find two more dollhouses, of course). Those are leaves outside the window, right? They're real, yes? I'm not so sure. Is anything real in this photo? Part of me thinks it can't possibly be. That I did actually live in a pretend world for so long that it totally makes sense to me now that I'm so clueless how to operate in reality.

So, Nicole and I went to Portland. It was amazing. We partied for an entire week with friends so very dear. I don't know how I'm back to regular life now. I cried today, so that's how, I guess. But really I'm so happy. I'm so happy to have such amazing friends all over the country. I'm so happy to spend time with my darling dear ones. My darling dear ones, you heard me right. Jessica, Carrie, Sam, Jaared, Lu, Rubbo, Rob, Stiles, Ginny, Cicely, Brian... I LOVE YOU!!!!! I can't believe that I have so many dear dear friends. Dear darling friends. Portland is beautiful. We walked everywhere, and it was only delightful, because it is so freaking beautiful there. But I did not go there for the beautiful lush landscape. I went there for my darling dear friends. I think I forgot one in that incredible list of special people... oh yes, DAN!! Nicole and I stayed with him the entire time. We were only apart for a few hours so we could get some alone time with Sam. What a darling darling dear. I'm sorry, I didn't see this double D coming, but it came, and now we must accept it. Dan is a darling darling dear, and I love him dearly.
I love life. That's how I feel right now after having spent an entire week with my dear best friend, Nicole, visiting our darling friends in a beautiful green world. And now I'm watching The Office with Justin and Zero, so even though I have to go to work and compromise my feelings, I am so happy here right now too.
But really, the reason I'm happy is because I got to see Country Strong on the plane ride to Portland. What a sick movie!!!

March is really hurting my feelings by dangling a day or two of warm weather in front of me but basically just being a cold beeyotch. That must be why I gravitated towards The Party today. One of my favorite groups from the 90s, as you well know. Let's all just soak in the joy that is this video:

I LOVE THIS WOMAN!!!!

I was just searching youtube for videos of The Craft, because that movie's always with me, and I found this GEM of a get beyond gets. I watched all 14 minutes and 23 seconds, and there was always some new twist that got me right in the appendix. (I'm referencing one of Justin's middle school friends who spent the night once and played Diddy Kong Racing with me all the next morning. Every time he'd hit me or get hit, he would say, "Roight in the appendix!" just like that, in a British accent. His name was Cory, and I loved him.)
She has uploaded 129 movie reviews, and I don't think I would ever tire of watching them. I want to watch them all. Crocodile Dundee 2, Highlander 2, Sister Act, Interview With the Vampire, oh my god, I love her taste so much I can't even tell you. Nicole and I just watched her review of Black Swan, and it's perfect in every single way.

I'm not going to mention the specific moments from these videos that I love so dearly, because then the magic would be gone. I think you'll be got at the same time I was got. LET'S GET GOT TOGETHER WATCHING HER REVIEWS FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I finally finished reading it! I either read something super fast or I take years to finish it. I read half of this story arc two summers ago. It's not even a matter of how much I like something. It's mostly about keeping momentum. I loved this so much. Alan Moore knows what's up.

I love him. Fell in love when I first saw him in Inception, and it only became greater after seeing him in Bronson and Wuthering Heights. He's the best actor. His feelings are real, and he is fearless. I don't care what he's like in real life. I just want to watch him in all the movies, and that's a good feeling.

Zero's watching The Pixies documentary, loudquietloud, that I watched yesterday. It's awesome. I love their songs so much. The movie captures some incredibly beautiful performances. It also captures the fact that the members of the band are just some people with a lot of issues. They're not even cool in the way that if they weren't in an amazing band, you'd never even give them a second look. They don't look cool. They don't act cool. But their music is SO COOL. It's so real. They're so real. I just love the thought that a band can really connect with people because their music is so great, not because they're fashionable or hip. And even more than that, I love the thought that people who are confused and troubled and lacking drive to succeed in most every other way can create something so incredibly beautiful and transcendent.

In this same vein, I was turned on to Scott Walker: 30th Century Man by my sister Jess, the same amazing person who showed me Suspiria and has some of the best taste in the entire world. My darling Nicole did a post of her favorite movies of 2010, and it inspired me to finally do my own, especially since last year was such a great one. Here there are!

10.True Romance

I'd seen this before, probably 5 years earlier, but watching it with Justin, Nicole, and Zero in the basement of our Bushwick apartment this past summer was like the proper first time. Such an awesome cast (even Christian Slater is cute, though I'm not a fan of his)- Patricia Arquette is such a babe. What I love most is the happy ending. I want happy endings sometimes, you know.

9. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

This was the year that I really fell in love with the Harry Potter movies. I've always liked them, but I could not get enough this year. HBO and ABC Family helped me out with that by showing them constantly. And the Chicago freeze helped to push me into a magical hibernation. When the 7th movie came out, I was more than ready. Team Charlotte went to a 6am showing on the night/morning of the premiere in IMAX. And it was awesome. So dark and so true to itself.

8. House of the Devil

I remember reading about this when it came out- a new horror movie in the style of 70s horror classics- and I was really excited to finally watch it. It really was all I could have wanted it to be. The acting was awesome, the story was totally creepy, and the ending was so on point. Stylistically, it was perfect.

7. Kick-ass

Chloe Moretz alone is enough to put this in my top ten, but the movie also has the rarest breed of Nicolas Cage (funny and charming), an unapologetic serious twist, awesome music, and tight action. It was a real get for me.

6. Jennifer's Body

This movie was so hated by everyone, and everyone is stupid. This movie is awesome!! It made me want to hang posters of Megan Fox all over my room I love her so much. She pulls off the ridiculous dialogue so perfectly that it actually sounds natural. Aside from my dream girl, the soundtrack is the shit, and the scary bits are truly scary. I LOVE THIS MOVIE WHY DIDN'T ANYONE GET IT FOR ME FOR CHRISTMAS???!

5. The Fly

OH MY GOD THE FLY. As I told you when I first watched it, it had been on my list of must-sees forever, and it turned out to be more than I ever imagined. What an insane journey. Some people do take a turn that they never meant to take, and it leads them to a horrible ending, and it is true tragedy, and The Fly portrays that so beautifully and truly. It's amazing.

4. Black Swan

Saw this just days within 2010 ending, and it makes it easily into the top five. I can't wait to see it again. How terrifying and beautiful and intense. This is what it's like to take LSD- you can not deny the fucking realness of life. Everything is really too real. We have filters that help us to deal because we have to go to work or go to school or appear put-together, but really, shit is a MESS- a horrifying, insanely beautiful mess, and that is what is up.

3. The Wrestler

Mickey Rourke in this movie is so heartbreakingly real, he should have won so many awards. I am in love with him. You might have thought that he was a monster, but only a monster could have shown you this kind of depth of character. Plus professional wrestling is so weird and intense- I love the way Aronofsky portrays that world so delicately and sweetly. It's beautiful.

2. La Vie En Rose

Finally watched this movie after moving to Chicago, and it tore me to pieces. Edith Piaf never knew that holding back was even an option, and Marion Cotillard held that knowledge close to her heart during her fearless performance. I was reminded of my mom so deeply during the interview scene on the beach near the end, and that reminder fed into the climactic ending of the movie so that I was just sobbing during the credits. Honestly, although it's not my number one, if there's any movie on this list you decide to watch after reading this, please let it be this.

1. Inception

If you say aloud during your first viewing, "This is the best movie I've ever seen in my life," then the matter is really settled. Inception blends romance and action with such real love. How horrifying would it be to watch the person you love forever jump to her death? How confusing would it be to have spent 50 years with her in a dream state during which you were completely lucid? How frustrating would it be to live with her while she believed that your life was just a dream? These are the questions that make Inception truly beautiful. But the action is innovative and captivating, and the actors are so effing stellar. And of course, the score is epic. I still find myself losing all my respect for people who didn't get this movie- who expected something else or didn't see what was right in front of them. That's how much I love it. It's perfect, and if you don't see that, you're just a butthole, and that's that. Sometimes the truth hurts. Sometimes your wife kills herself, and everyone thinks you killed her, and you have to plant an idea in the mind of the son of a CEO to get your kids back. Always, Tom Hardy is my husband.

4. Little Lover's So Polite - Silversun Pickups
I listened to this on repeat for at least a week straight, and it was the perfect song for fall and all the hushed excitement that season brings. Helped that it was in Jennifer's Body, my secret love!

3. Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien - Edith Piaf
Featured in two of the most amazing movies I saw this year. I first came to know it as the music to signal the kick in Inception, and then I watched Marion Cotillard destroy the screen in the most unstoppable performance ever as Edith Piaf, and it tore my soul apart.

2. Diamond Eyes - Deftones
Diamond Eyes is one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard. Deftones are so terribly underrated. I listened to this album and only this album for the entire month of June and well into July. I could not get enough. I don't want to be cool if cool means thinking My Beautiful Dark Fantasy is the best album of the year. But I am cool, so I love Diamond Eyes.

1. Only Shallow - My Bloody Valentine
Forever number one. Listening to this song on vinyl in the past year has been a real lifesaver. Putting on this record and turning the volume up is like performing a magic spell. Any troubles I have are blasted away and all that exists is the sound, and it's perfect.

But the secret Number One is this little gem from the Prince of the Internet:

Ever since I heard this was coming out and watched the trailer, I've been dying to see it. I LOVE Darren Aronofsky's style. He has the most beautifully lyrical way of telling a story that begins with a bit of uncertainty and discomfort and turns into a surreal nightmare of reality that eventually becomes so intense that you can really hardly take it. But you do take it, and you love it! Well, I love it. Requiem for a Dream (John, did I ever watch that movie for fun?) is incredibly harsh but mesmerizing. The Wrestler was gentler but still had that arc that breaks your heart apart. Poetry. Black Swan was so perfect. I can't stop thinking about it.
The buildup was uncomfortable and disturbing, but it was bearable, and I was even able to laugh a few times. When he decided to start careening off a cliff, however, I thought I was going to have a heart attack. Might have had something to do with the Cherry Coke I was drinking, which I never do since my organs decided to age 20 times faster than the rest of me and can't handle that stuff, but when shit got terrifying, it got reeeeaaaally terrifying. I couldn't catch my breath. I actually gasped not once, but twice in just a few seconds time- loudly. I was covering my eyes, but not actually for long enough to miss anything - it was just a reflex because I was being assaulted. But in the best way! Don't be mistaken- I didn't ever want it stop. When it did stop, it was perfect, though. Too bad Tchaikovsky couldn't compose music to save his life, that d-bag. But for real, the score tore my heart apart even more. Swan Lake is so emotional and tragic and moving.
I love the theme of losing control. Because losing control can free you. Your ego helps you in many situations, and it can be fun, but you can't have an ego and be thinking about yourself all the time and expect to ever really experience transcendence. The thing with losing yourself is that it can also be so terrifying, because every aspect of humanity exists, and you can find anything in the abyss. Killers exist. Healers exist. Dumb idiots exist. Artists exist. Lovers exist. It's everything all of the time, y'all, and it is crazy. So I love the exploration of the idea that losing control in an environment like that (this) can mean going down a terrifying dirt road, but then maybe you'll still be so in love once you're through it, because really everything is perfect sometimes, and the past and the future don't matter- just that feeling that everything is perfect in that one moment.
I think we can control many things, but sometimes that means letting go of what you think you know. And doesn't that feel a lot like madness? But isn't that okay? Terrible things don't have to be only terrible. Existing is very complex.
What I'm saying is please go see Black Swan, because that shit is off the chain!!! I mean, I have to wake up in 2 hours to go to the airport to be reunited with many people I love sooooooo very dearly, and yet I'm staying up just to write this. It really got me. Double rainbow all the way.

I can not get enough Harry Potter right now, y'all. The best thing about having cable has been getting to watch many of the Harry Potter movies over and over in the past couple of weeks. The Half-Blood Prince is on HBO right now. This one is so intense! When I read this book, it really got me. I have a very distinct memory of riding in the car with Zero from our little apartment in Carrboro to the store right after I'd finished reading it. I was sitting in the passenger seat with the window down, just staring at the moon, thinking of Dumbledore and crying. I actually recorded a song later that night- a piano piece called "Ode to Dumbledore"- I was not joking around. It was a very heartfelt performance. Remember wondering if Snape was good or not? Oh man, what a tumultuous time in our Harry Potter history.
I can not wait to see the new movie. I only read the last book the one time, as soon as I got it after waiting in line the night it was released, so I don't remember what happens very well at all. I'd love to re-read it before the movie, but I don't think I'll get my hands on a copy before then. Speaking of which, I can not believe we don't have the entire series here. What a mistake. I love the world of Harry Potter so much. It's so dark and tragic and scary and yet hopeful and triumphant and exciting. I love Harry. I know he was written in terrible ways sometimes, but I just love his story. I can never get over the fact that he never knew his parents. Oh yeah, and that's because they were murdered. I am still torn up sometimes over losing my dad as a kid, so imagining what it would be like to have never known him or my mom at all is so intense. And then to have everybody treat him like a freak, for better or worse, because he survived an attack by the most evil wizard ever. And of course there's his lovely extended family who always treated him well. I mean, yikes. I just love him, and I love that he is never afraid of Voldemort. I also love Neville and Dobby. Just putting that out there.

I've been really happy with the movies, too. There are always issues, of course, but really, I love the movies.

I can not believe how perfectly cast everyone is. Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix??!

How is what she's wearing for that interview? I love her.

Gary F. Oldman as Sirius?!?!? HUSBAND OF A LIFETIME.

How perfect can you get? He is Snape. We were joking the other day about re-enacting a scene with Hermione so we could make fun of Emma Watson's acting, and we ended up realizing that no one could actually make fun of Alan Rickman's acting, because he's too ridiculously perfect. # Yesterday, I caught the train to work super early, and I had time to get some tea once I got into town, so I started walking to the cafe. I had on a hooded peacoat that used to belong to Kyler- hood up, grey trousers, and black boots. I was listening to my ipod through giant over-the-ear headphones, and I saw someone's shadow close in on me and felt a tap on my arm. I turned around to see a young lady, close to my age, and she gestured for me to take off my headphones, which I did. She told me that she had to stop me, because she was picking up really strong vibrations from me. She was speaking very softly but urgently, like she was telling me an incredibly important secret. "I really have to tell you something," she said to me. I was unsure how to respond. I was confounded since the moment she approached me. There were lots of people walking around us- college students mostly. Why had she singled me out? Was it because I was alone? Or was she really sensing things about me? I asked her where she wanted to go to talk. She pointed across the street to a second floor apartment amongst the shops, where a sign labeled Astrology pointed inside. I told her I didn't really have the time or the money for that, and she again told me how important it was that she talk to me. She said it would be free for five minutes. Eventually, she won me over. I wonder why. I think I was just super intrigued. She was convincing, whether she was being real or not, and I wanted to know what she was going to say. Perhaps it was that, despite the fact that I said no at least three times before, she didn't give up. As we walked across the street and into the apartment, she asked me casual questions, made small talk. She seemed very confident but slightly robotic. Once inside, she took me into a room like a closet. Angels flew on the wallpaper. We sat down across from each other. My nose was running as she started to speak very intensely and quickly to me.
"I don't normally stop people on the street like that, but the energy around you was very intense, and I felt that I must try to help you. You have negative energy in your life. It wants you to think that it's coming from you, but it's not. It's something outside of you. And it's getting stronger."
I was quite freaked out, as you can imagine. Despite the part of me that was skeptical and focused on the fact that she wanted money from me and had solicited me on the street, I felt some truth in her words. Some great darkness exists with me. I tend to think it's not noticeable to strangers and people I don't know well. The people closest to me certainly know about my scorpion, but how did this girl? Am I easy to read even in passing on the street? Or is she a really good reader?
She elaborated a bit, and then she told me that she needed some candles, some crystals, and a fee from me in order to help save me from this negative energy. She said to me, "You can not stop it. It wants you to think you can, and that's how it's getting stronger, but you can not stop it. Like I told you, I am a spiritual healer, and I can help you."
I gotta say, it was quite a let down. I told her I couldn't afford her services, and she still told me that I can't stop the negative energy from hurting me. That just seems mean. She had me at the creepy tale of bad all around me, but then she just ruined it by telling me I'm powerless against it.
Am I powerless against negative forces? Am I powerless against gravity? Yes. Can I still find ways to work with these things? Yes. It doesn't have to be a struggle, lady. It's about being friends, a great embrace. Ugh, and I still ended up giving her the money I was going to use to buy tea after she told me it would be free because she just had to tell me something horrible to try and ruin my day. That's a nice interpretation of the events, right?
I love you out there. Let's get along, even if you go your way and I go mine. Unless you are actually a monster like in Paranormal Activity, and then I think it's best if we break up. But hey, no hard feelings!

Okay, so I really loved this movie. Like loved it so much that I was trying to stay up later than everyone just to watch it, because I was hooked immediately, and then found out when it was going to come on again so I could watch the entire thing and was so glad I did because it was great. It has a 42% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and the audience rating is actually worse at 38%. Really? I mean, it wasn't perfect or anything. I know Diablo Cody's forced slang is sometimes distracting and dumb, but it was fun just laughing at that. And really, I don't have any other real criticisms. I loved the way the story was told, I loved the makeup and effects- that shit was actually scary, and I loved Megan Fox. I loved all the characters. I loved the soundtrack. I was totally into it. Am I crazy? Is something wrong with me? I mean, I really like Megan Fox. I wish you could see my face, because I'm like waiting for someone to throw something at me for saying that. But I don't know what people wanted from this movie that they didn't get. I'm befuddled! I would watch this movie multiple times and love every second of it. I'm really glad that Nicole and Zero are on board with me. I trust their opinions. It kind of reminded me of the fun I'd have reading Christopher Pike when I was 11, and coming from me, you know that's a huge compliment.

Sleepwalkers is a very special movie from 1992 written by Stephen King and starring Madchen Amick, who played Shelly on Twin Peaks (she's the one on the right in that photo of the three ladies in my last post). The theme music was also sampled by The Fugees in the song "Ready or Not," something my brothers and I were delighted to accidentally discover when watching the movie for the first time when we were kids. But the very best part of the entire film takes place in the clip below. The person who uploaded it is obviously more into the "cop cabob" line, but I'm not sure why, because the cop's song is actually mind-blowing.

It's all about his delivery. I'm not even sure what he said, but if I were to really try to decipher the words, I think it would take a lot of the magic away. I like that it sounds insane, and I love him for making it that way.

Hi all, fun news in the world of gets. Nicole and I have decided to open our own online clothing shop! Chicago has a great amount of secondhand stores, some with incredibly crowded racks, where I can just hear the few gems hiding within, begging to be found. We hope to have our first collection up and available by the end of next week. I've wanted to try doing this for years now, and the chemistry now is just right, so we're going for it.
Nicole and I love finding diamonds in the rough, and we both find amazing pieces that we love but don't have room for in our own wardrobes, so we're really excited to share those pieces with other lovely souls who will take them in and give them the attention they deserve. I've always loved browsing the online shops of creative and stylish ladies, so it feels good to be contributing to that wonderful community. Sharing is caring. (And caring is creepy, which we know I'm very familiar with.)
We're keeping the Gets Galore name and spirit. We both embrace so many different kinds of styles and wardrobes, and we want our store to reflect that. We'll have moments of reflection and sad beauty, dark terror, and sweet romance (sincerely!), but we also want to keep laughing until we're old and gray. (I urge you to let go of whatever might keep you from experiencing the sincerity of that film.) Justin performed the ceremony in Forest Park, and Nicole and Marcus were our witnesses. But all of our family and friends were there in our hearts. Afterwards, we celebrated with a small group of dear friends, pizza, and a lot of drinks. The entire next day was spent packing and loading the U-Haul, and we only got four hours of sleep before tying loose ends (very loosely) and hitting the road to Chicago, which I'll detail more later. I just want to document here what a whirlwind it's been, and how fortunate I am to have so much incredible love in my life from so many beautiful sources. Have I told you lately how grateful I am? I am in awe.

I spent the evening going through a box of my childhood that Lee put together for me. I won so many certificates before high school. It's no wonder I stopped caring. You can only get so much praise for being the best at everything in school before you decide to try being the worst at it. Or at least search for something different. If you're really awesome like me, anyway. Gotta keep things interesting, you know. I wish that I would decorate an entire room with all my certificates from elementary and middle school. My certificates and school portraits. It was really a shining time in my life.

I can never get enough of this one, because it really captures who I was at the time. I wasn't a nerd. I was a true scholar. And I was never conceited. I just cared about reading and math and being a nice person. I wanted to be a famous author when I grew up. So special.

I'm glad that I've instead become a professional question mark. Not everyone can master these skills! So many people just go along and accomplish goal after goal, straight and narrow as could be. Imagine constantly re-examining your choices and taking turn after turn into a labyrinthine abyss. It ain't easy!

Um, what does it mean that I put my hair up after my shower today so it would dry in a weird way, made a sandwich and started watching Tim and Eric clips online, only to discover that Zach Galifianakis has the exact same hairstyle in this video:

I may have two tiny braids instead of one giant braid on each side and three small buns instead of two giant ones, but it is the same hairstyle. And that Tim and Eric and Zach should all be my bffs. And that my hair is ridiculous.

While I was surfing the internet (and I am a pro surfer), I had a whim to watch the music video for "Me and You" by Cassie:

I think this song is pretty tight, and I respect a music video that's just the singer dancing around by herself, no doubt, so I had to stop watching this one and instead look up "Pleasure Principle" by Janet Jackson.

I concluded that the video for "Pleasure Principle", though it has the exact same premise as "Me and You", is in a league of its own. Why? Because Janet Jackson is a fucking badass! Sure, Cassie is very beautiful, as you're reminded by each super close-up on her face, and she's a good dancer, but she is interested in seducing you. Whereas Miss Jackson is interested in schooling you. I would rather be schooled, friends.

When Cassie starts taking off her clothes, she reveals skimpier outfits. Janet reveals a t-shirt, because the only thing she's taking off is that hot denim jacket, because girlfriend is here to work. And, um, who's wearing knee pads here? Yeah, that would be the BADASS! She's not gonna be lazy and just sit around in a bikini top, no. She's going to be busting some serious moves, and she's prepared. Janet has a chair to kick over- that's how serious she is.
Cassie begins her video by dancing while facing a giant mirror. Yeah, there are mirrors at the beginning of "Pleasure Principle" too, but Janet is way too into the true attitude of her moves and lyrics to give the mirrors more than a glance. When she finally does decide to really watch herself dance, it's in a mirror that is fucking broken! Just sit on that.

No offense to Cassie, who is probably a really sweet girl, but man, do I wish everyone would take a lesson from Janet Jackson back in the day. Take a look at the video for "Miss You Much" and tell me you are not so happy to live in this world:

I love how incredibly pure this video is. The song is fucking bomb, and the dancing is really too good to be true. And can we just have a moment of silence for the fact that Janet is wearing what appears to be black denim and a long-sleeve shirt/vest combo buttoned up all the way to the top?!? I LOVE HER. Also, I think if there were a music video I'd choose for Nicole to re-enact (all by herself), it would definitely be this. I wish she was one (all) of the dancers in this video BAD.

If you want to be a little lazier than Janet but still want to be cool, take a note from Rihanna, who perfects lazy awesome in the video for "Rude Boy":

The lesson here is in order to really be badass, you have to fully embrace being tough or fully embrace being lazy. Don't settle somewhere in between. It's all about your attitude. Don't be content to just look pretty. If you are giving it your all one way or another, you will be beautiful.

I barely understand this life.

Kangaroos exist. I grew up in the 90s with Nirvana. Kate Bush. Am I making any sense? No? Exactly. This is all so ridiculous. It's the most beautiful. Every single thing. Every horror. Every moment of despair. Everything. It all should happen. It's all perfect. Why does anyone think perfection can not be reached? We experience it constantly. Did you make a giant mistake? Perfect.

I just saw this video for the first time. I really like when my brother Lee asks, "What's happening?" I wonder the same thing as often. This is all insane. We're barely getting by. Justin's watching the music video for Gravel Pit by Wu-Tang Clan. Method Man was either #2 or #3 on the original Husbands list I made when I was 14. I'm a million years old now.

I spent the last week reading Gerald's Game by Stephen King. He's the very best. What a hilarious world this is. Nightmares and dreamscapes. Blargh and derp. I love it all. It's horrible and sad and heartbreaking and SO BEAUTIFUL.

So I saw Kick-Ass yesterday with Marcus, Justin, and Zero (for Marky's bday!), and I LOVED it. The movie and I fell in love, and it is for real. I had only heard good things about it, but then Marcus told me that Roger Ebert gave it one star and called it reprehensible. So then I wanted to see it more than ever, because I usually agree with Roger Ebert about movies, but I had a feeling I was really gonna love this one.
How do I love Kick-Ass? Let me count the ways.

1. The music and sound were done almost perfectly. The right music at the right moment is so key. Only a couple of moments didn't work out, and one of them was just the song they chose for the end credits, so that doesn't really matter. More importantly, they played the same ~~Godspeed You Black Emperor~~ John Murphy (thanks, derp) from 28 Days Later. Excellent choice. Music like that gives such heavy gravity to the action, and it makes me feel more connected.
2. HIT GIRL HIT GIRL HIT GIRL HIT GIRL!!!!!!!!! I love her. She is maybe the most alternative kid I've ever seen, so yeah, I am a huge fan. I could count the ways I love her, but it would require a separate post.
3. Nicolas Cage making jokes instead of being a joke! I love him in so many movies (Wild at Heart, Leaving Las Vegas, and Moonstruck, just to name a few), but it seems like he hasn't done anything fun or actually good in such a long time. He really nails the role of Big Daddy, though. Nails it. It felt really good to love him again.
4. The comic-book-ness (real word!) of it all: an 11 year-old and her father training to seek revenge on the man who nearly destroyed their lives; a geeky but actually hot teenager trying to prove to himself that he is a hero and get the girl of his dreams; a cowardly villain who takes pleasure in the pain of others; the ridiculous weapons and impossible fights. So right.

I could keep going, but I want to stop there to discuss Roger Ebert's review. There are spoilers there, so I'm glad I didn't read it before I saw the movie. Anyway, here's a particularly garbage opinion he had: "This isn't comic violence. These men, and many others in the film, are really stone-cold dead. And the 11-year-old apparently experiences no emotions about this." Well, actually, it IS comic violence. It's a movie based on a comic book, in fact, and it is definitely stylized. The men who are killed in the movie are BAD GUYS- ever heard of 'em? Do you hate westerns, Roger Ebert? Are they too brutal for you? Do you hate all action movies where anyone dies? Do action heroes ever despair over the evil men they kill? What are you talking about?
Here's another: "Big Daddy and Mindy never have a chat about, you know, stuff like how when you kill people, they are really dead. This movie regards human beings like video-game targets. Kill one, and you score. They're dead, you win. When kids in the age range of this movie's home video audience are shooting one another every day in America, that kind of stops being funny." Maybe they did chat about that, sir. Maybe we just don't need to see that chat in this particular movie, because we are not big babies and we are smart enough to know that this is an awesome action movie that does not need to be taken so seriously. Was anyone keeping score in the movie? Um, no. Kick-Ass is only trying to help people, dummy, and Big Daddy and Hit Girl are waging a vendetta against a group of scumbags, remember?

I kinda feel bad for him, because Kick-Ass is the best, and I want to see it again right away. I had so much fun watching it. You should see it right away and tell me what you think.

OH MY GOD THE FLY.
I've wanted to see this movie since I was a kid, but it just never happened until last night. I didn't have any expectations, but I was still somehow thrown for a loop. It's called One Million Miles an Hour From Start to Finish. It's insane. The gross factor had me screaming more than once. At one point, I really was just saying, "Nooooooooooooooooooooooo" for a good five seconds.
I was reminded of my favorite David Lynch film, Eraserhead, because it also tells a tale of really disturbing things happening very privately. I just love that idea. Of course, Eraserhead is abstract, and The Fly is a ~~slap~~ stab in the face. The creature effects (creature effects!) are incredible. No computer could have achieved that level of horror. I learned that Chris Walas and Stephen Dupuis won the Academy Award for Best Makeup that year, as they should have. Once you've seen the movie, you should check out the Wikipedia entry about the Special Effects. They really did it.
I really want to share images with you, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen the movie yet. I had no idea what I was going to see, and that made the experience all the more terrible. And I mean terrible in the best of ways.

I have a great idea for a movie, but it should have been made in 1993. Of course.
